OUR STORY

I am a young, beginner farmer and owner of Humble Beginnings Ranch who strives to change my family farm from industrial farming to a regenerative farm. I want to heal the land and build our soils to where they were before the industrial farming days began. I want to build resilience and farm the way my great-grandfather did. Using nature as my guide, with the help of our animals, compost and cover crops.   I hope that other farmers- especially young farmers will see the way that I am farming and want to be part of this change too.  I am regenerating a 997 acre farm that was once row cropped rotationally between soybeans and corn for over 120 years.  I am in the process of restoring “dirt” back  into soil by planting crop fields into beautiful meadows of perennial native grasses like big blue, little blue, indian grasses and forbs.  In December of 2014 I brought my first 16 head of bison onto our farm.  The bison are helping to heal the land.  As they graze the grasses they promote healthy grass growing through grazing and nipping the tops of the grasses stimulating growth.  They leave natural fertilizer for the plants and soil with their dung and urine that is left behind after they've been in the pastures. The fur carries the seeds across the land planting new grasses and forbs.  The hooves loosens and ariates the soils enabling healthy plants to grow.  Once again our ranch has pheasants that haven't been on my parent's farm for over fifty years.  My goal is to plant thousands of trees to restore fence rows that have been torn out by industrial farming.  The fence rows will consist of sugar maple, nut and fruit trees that will serve as wind breakers for cold, windy winter days and shade for the hot summer days for our pasture animals and wildlife.  The trees will also provide food for the wildlife and our pastured animals as well as  food for us.  The farm has over 50 acres of woods in which I am restoring.  There are a lot of dead and fallen Ash and Elm trees that have died due to diseases that swepted through the woods. We have been wood chipping and planting new seedlings in the woods to help regenerate the woods.  Everyone can be a part of "regenerative farming" with their support of buying local. By buying from farms that support regenerative practices. Farms that are pasture/ grass feeding and raising their animals humanely. Farms that are raising vegetables and fruits without sprays that are hurting our environment and our bees that pollinate our crops that feed us.  We can all  plant a tree. We can plant Perennial, native plants (instead of annuals) that will grow deep roots, use less water and feed our bees, insects and birds.  We will have healthy economic thriving communities, healthy eco-systems, build soils and land, healthy animals one acre at a time together.  There is so much that all of us can do.
